Business Blog

Blogging for Change - Old issues, new solutions

I thought it was a good idea to to start a business blog to supplement the journal articles I write on change management. (PDF Articles) I trust that some of the issues raised here may be of interest to you to pursue away from this blog of ideas and thoughts. The blogs run in date order with the most recent at the top of this page.

Organisational Clutter & the Energy of Leadership

Personal Disorganisation

When we talk about 'clutter' we usually refer to that stuff that is filling up your office at work or your home. The garage or the attics are places where we tend to store things until we think we need them. But for some, this spreads through their whole work area or house. When the day arrives when to move job or house it is amazing how much stuff we dump and destroy - yet it has been hanging about for years clogging up the way you do things about the house and office, acting as a distraction from higher value activities.

I am not talking about the individual problem - which is a sign of a messy individual who cannot make a decision about how they plan their lives. Most who portray this procrastination 'type' behaviour will find that their effectiveness is marred because something is blocking their progress through life. That barely discernible desk covered with piles of paper ignored week after week, month after month, may be occupying your mind but adding little value.

A spare room full of unused exercise equipment could be blocking your brain from flexing its powerful muscles to really focus on personal improvement. This is unfinished business you needing attention. And until you do, you're putting your personal effectiveness at a terrible disadvantage.

What is Clutter?

I believe clutter represents something that's incomplete-an unmade decision, unmet need, or emotional or psychological block. What's more, if you are a manager responsible for others, your bad behaviour will spread throughout your business. The indecision to deal with clutter really points to a resistance to experience those feelings that will naturally arise when dealing with it.

You may have 6 month's worth of paperwork to file from your new project or venture. Every moment spent in your an untidy office clouds your judgement and distorts your priorities, distracting you from critical issues. The clutter continues to rob more of your valuable time, talents, and potential.

Do you recognise that when you avoid de-cluttering you workspace you create a lot of unfinished business in your life?

Organisational Clutter

I keep in regular contact with my clients and always review progress on any initiative. I believe my emphasis is not just on diagnosing problems but forming partnerships with my clients to actually implement change to create that desired future. What really gnaws at me is when I visit a client and discover that key issues that should have been confronted, are still holding back the organisation from moving on.

Symptoms of Organisational Clutter

  • Failing to take action and confront resistance. Knowing who is resisting but not taking the challenge
  • Endorsing bad behaviour by not taking action. Although we articulate the way we want things to be, we let excuses cloud our judgement.
  • We assume it's just a training issue or that someone else will fix it
  • Putting up with excuses
  • Not making the tough decisions - this usually relates to performance management
  • Assuming that, in the long-run, things will work out. All we can be sure of in the long run is that we pay taxes and then die and our loved ones left behind pay more taxes!

Leadership Energy & Organisational Change

You are doing no one any favours by not taking time to change the energy around you, from low and draining to sharp, focused and positive. As managers you have to do this. Changing the frequency of energy around your Leadership behaviour actually shifts your thinking and behaviour to a higher state, making time for greater success and happiness.
